Checkmate is a full-service strategic communications firm specializing in public relations, media relations, political consulting, marketing, advertising, digital communications, government relations, grassroots advocacy, and Netroots advocacy. Led by a team of tested professionals with decades of experience at the highest levels of politics, government and corporate advertising, we offer a full range of communications services that help our clients meet and beat their desired goals.

The Team


  • bradBrad Dufault | Partner
    After working for four years at a bigger communications firm, Brad founded Checkmate in 2006 as a two-man consulting firm, and has since grown the company into a full-service strategic communications firm. Brad oversees all Checkmate productions and accounts. He specializes in generating ideas, formulating strategies, and creating and implementing strategic communications plans for Checkmate’s clients. Brad guides his clients through the entire process, ensuring they are targeting the right audience, with the right message, through the right medium. Brad has worked on a number of successful campaigns, including the campaign to win marriage equality in Rhode Island, numerous gubernatorial and mayoral campaigns, high-profile Senate and House races, as well as ad campaigns for clients like AARP, Providence Performing Arts Center, New England Institute of Technology and labor unions throughout New England.
    Brad holds a degree in Communications from the Hugh Downs School of Communications at Arizona State University. He is a big Boston sports fan and resides in East Greenwich with his wife Andrea and daughter Ruby.

  • rayRay Sullivan | Partner
    Before leading the successful effort to win marriage equality in Rhode Island, Ray served as a senior political advisor to several statewide and federal candidates and elected leaders including Congressman Jim Langevin, Lt. Governor Charles Fogarty and former senator and Democratic gubernatorial nominee Myrth York. In 2008 he was picked to be the state director for President Obama’s campaign in Rhode Island. Prior to that, Ray served six years in the General Assembly, representing the people of Coventry and West Greenwich in the 29th House District. In 2013, he was recognized in Campaigns and Elections magazine “The Influencers 500” – listing of top political operatives from across the country. A former news reporter and AmeriCorps* volunteer, Ray got into politics to help create the right kind of change. His focus at Checkmate is media messaging, digital strategies, grassroots advocacy and general consulting. Ray studied history at Providence College; is an avid hiker and biker, and a lifelong Red Sox fan.

  • adamAdam Wotherspoon | Multimedia Director
    Adam handles everything digital at Checkmate. He also does all of Checkmate’s video editing. His web skills span across many coding languages from HTML to CSS to PHP to JQuery. He is also proficient in Photoshop, so he can make all those websites look real snazzy. He is also very hip on the social networking scene and spends most nights on Facebook, You Tube, and Twitter–so yeah, he’s super cool! When Adam’s not building websites, he is editing video. All of our commercials, videos and film are spliced together by Adam. He earned a degree in Communications from Northeastern University as well as graduating from Boston University’s Center for Digital Imaging Arts Advanced Web Design program. When Adam’s not being a total geek in front of his computer, you can usually find him in 5 places; on a mountain, on a boat, at a rock concert, playing guitar, or…well I guess he’d be in front of his computer if he’s not in those places.

  • eddyEddy Stahowiak | Art Director
    Eddy oversees all creative at Checkmate. An award-winning graphic designer, Eddy has managed numerous branding campaigns throughout the New England region. From concept to design to production, Eddy has experience in all facets of graphic design. Some of his past clients include The Providence Bruins, Working Rhode Island, Prudential Gammons Realty, Narragansett Indian Tribe, The Beacon Mutual Insurance Company, and Villager Publications. Eddy is a graduate of Rhode Island College in the area of Industrial Technology. Eddy is also a professional photographer and has a true passion for photography. He snapped the headshots for this site. It took everything he had to make this crew look presentable.

  • trevTrevor Holden | Production Director
    Trevor handles everything on the moving image front. He has never met a camera system he does not like and currently is fascinated with everything HDSLR. He enjoys the constant challenge that he finds in the diverse and interesting spectrum of situations shooting for Checkmate produces, ranging from interviews to on the fly documentary, and even time lapse. Trevor graduated from the New York Film Academy and has a Bachelors in History as well as Film from Rhode Island College. When not shooting for Checkmate, Trevor can be found rock climbing, mountain biking, traveling to and from a coffee shop or perhaps shooting still photography, which is another huge passion of his. Trevor is an avid blog reader and follows all of the latest geeky film and video news from idols such as Phillip Bloom, Vincent Laforet, Chase Jarvis, and Rodney Charters.
